If that's the case, why do apps like WS-Ping, WS-Finger, and WS-Gopher all
wait for a dial-in connection to be established first?
I found this in one of the docs for WS-Finger:
"... now checks for the WSAEWOULDBLOCK error that connect() usually
returns. This isn't actually an error, but merely indicates that the
connection request is still pending completion."
Interesting, don't you think? This note, combined with the correct behavior
of some apps, makes me believe that the problem is with Eudora and other apps
not using exactly the right test to determine if the connection is ready.
I'd like to hear from Peter Tattam, or one of the authors of Eudora on this...

WSIRC does not use such a file. It comes with and uses BWCC.DLL. Make sure that
you are using wsirc12b. You can get it in the ../win3/uploads directory on CICA
or any CICA mirror (i.e. nic.switch.ch or polecat.law.indiana.edu).

Some NNTP servers require user authentication to be able to post (or complete
other commands). If you server requires this, you need to complete the user
name and password sections under Config/Configure Comm....
Or, if you filled this in accidently and there is no required authentication,
WinVN may be feeding this info to the server and getting back an error condition.
These are just thoughts. You might want to look into them if you haven't already.

Phttttttt on all of them... Delphi especially. AOL too. Better to
find a local friendly that'll offer you your own domain for
free or a few bucks a month if you know anything about computers.
If you are not a net.hack, then they are fine. Personally, I'd
prefer a local Freenet. They're popping up all over the place.

I think the proper way to get the Trumpet Winsock to use bootp in a
scripted dial-in is to use a "BOOTP" command in the script just *before* you
have it start slip. The "BOOTP" command in the script will then initiate a
bootp *after* a slip connection is established. You also must have your
I.P. address set to 0.0.0.0 (perhaps BOOTP would work too, I don't know).
There is information about the use and syntax of the BOOTP script command in
the documentation file for Trumpet Winsock.
The way to start bootp in a *manual* dialing situation (no script) is
to place the string "bootp" (lower case letters) in the I.P. address entry
box of the setup screen. In this way Trumpet Winsock will initiate a bootp
after you hit escape to leave the "dialing" mode and enter the "slip"
mode.
This brings up a problem that I was having with the University of
Minnesota's SLIP server.... I was able to get Trumpet Winsock to establish
a SLIP connection (at least I think so), but was having trouble with the
bootp part of it. I would get a message indicating that Trumpet Winsock
was attempting bootp, but would not get a "succesful" reply until I'd
escaped to "dial" mode and back a number of times...... I haven't tracked
anything consistent yet.... Anybody else had this sort of problem?
- Pete

I also spoke to Tom Bedjeric (sp?) of QPC. He said that he has heard about
the problem, and that it does not appear to be present on version 3.98 of
QVTNet. He is using the same version (April beta) of the Microsoft TCP/IP
stack as we are. __Before_you_ask__, version 3.98 will be out within the next
couple of weeks, and is expected to contain a number of new features (we will
find out when it comes out, I guess). It may also be the last 16 bit version
(apparently there are lots of problems caused by the limitations of a 16 bit
environment).
Looks like we will see a solution shortly in either case.

You should be looking for a SLIP packet driver.
Which winsock are you using? (trumpet has built-in slip)
Otherwise you can find the Crynwr driver slip850.com in the archive
oak.oakland.edu:/pub/msdos/pktdrvr/pktd11.zip
Of course this a assumes that you have access to a SLIP dial-in service.

Hmmm....apparently you are only supposed to load real-mode NDIS 2.0 drivers
from the transport= line. Even if you don't load MOUSE.xxx, Windows will load
mouse drivers for you. If you want to load a mouse driver for use in DOS, why
not load MOUSE.COM in AUTOEXEC.BAT after SMARTDRV.EXE ?

Subject: SLIP & TCPMan
Hello World,
I am having quite a problem getting my SLIP connection to work. If anyone
could shead some light on it I would appreciate it.
When I start TCPMan, I get a message that says:"enablecommnotification
failed", without the quotes. I can then log on to the computer, but none of
my windows internet programs work. (WSping, Endura, etc). I am doing a manual
login.
I was told to run TCPMan, login, then minimize TCPMan and run IP software. Do
I have things mixed up?
This is very frustrating!!!
Thanks for any help.
